Nowadays there are less and less popular games that can be played by more than one person on the same console. This could be because developers think there is more money to be made by selling copies of a game to each player instead of letting the players share a screen. Though this could be the case, there are still some pretty popular couch co-op titles out there that you can play with your friends or your girl, or whoever. Excluding, fighting games like Mortal Kombat, I’m gonna give you a quick list of some fire titles i’ve played with others side by side.
1 Call Of Duty
I’ve enjoyed COD since the first black ops. Kino Der Toten in Black Ops Zombies, for example, is an iconic game mode where the goal is to survive as many waves of zombies as possible. Best played as a team, you can play as four characters that start in a small room, opening more parts of the game’s map as you gain points from killing zombies. That is just one fun mode, however. Being a first person shooter, Call Of Duty in general has many different game modes that you can play in split screen with others.
In Call Of Duty WW2. there is a mode called “Prop Hunt”, which I feel is the most fun for this version of COD. Like hide & seek with guns, you play as various items (props) and try to blend into your surroundings while avoiding being shot by the prop hunters. You can see where the other people playing as props are, and all prop players can change into a different prop up to two times. If in danger, you can flashbang the enemy, giving you time to run, and hide again. All props will whistle at certain intervals, giving away their approximate location while the hunters try to hit everything hoping to land a mark. You switch from prop to prop hunter between rounds. The team with the highest score after all rounds wins.
Besides the two i’ve mentioned, there are other modes across the COD game titles. Multiplayer modes like team deathmatch, gun game, one in the chamber, and so on are available across most of the COD titles. If you have the hand-eye coordination to play this, you can have loads of fun both online, or offline using AI “bot” players instead.
2 A Way Out
A way out is a game that was specifically meant to be played by two people. You can’t play it without another person. You at least need to have wifi for matchmaking to play it online. You can play as two different characters, Leo and Vincent, who end up as cell mates in prison. After helping eachother avoid assassination, they form and go through with a plan to escape the prison in order to take down a man known as Harvey, who is responsible for meddling in their lives.
This game is all about playing through it’s story, and enjoying the narrative. You can talk to NPCs and play little side games, but after the story is done, it’s done. The only real replay value is to see the differences in the choices that you make throughout the game, as you will have to make certain decisions at times. There are also different endings available for you to see.
3 Gang Beasts
Gang Beasts is a whacky multiplayer party type game where you can have up to four people playing at the same time. The goal of the game is to be the last one standing in a sort of battle royale. You play as puppet like ragdoll characters that grab onto each other, and try to throw one another off of the map, or into hazards. You can burn others shred each other, leave each other to drown, and hit one another until they are unconscious long enough to be picked up and thrown into harms way.
This game is best for when you get fucked up with some friends, in my opinion, and just want to laugh. I’ve only played this a few times, and the game is pretty simple, but pretty fun for the moment, at least. As a bonus, you can have gang beast costumes like Rick&Morty, Godzilla, Randy Marsh from South Park, and plenty of other popular outside characters.
4 Cuphead
A fun cartoony game, Cuphead is a game that is best played with another person. This game does not play. It is difficult, thus it requires deep concentration, timing, patience, and teamwork to complete. There are different bosses and each one has different phases where they change their method of attack. You have to choose your attacks, and special moves according to your tactics if you want to have the best chance of defeating them all.
You’ll have to get all contracts to advance to the last map, and ultimately face the devil himself. You can go on coin runs to buy more special moves, and more attacks to fight your enemies. You can buy more lives, become temporarily invincible, and do other things. You will, at times, need to slap your friend’s ghost to bring them back into the game before they go out of the screen’s bounds. If you have more than one life left, your friend can come back by taking one of your lives.
5 Resident Evil 5
My favorite co-op game, Resident Evil 5 is a shooter that you can play by yourself, or preferably with a person next to you. You find yourself on the continent of Africa, playing as either Chris Redfield, or Sheva Alomar as you investigate rumors of terroists possessing a viral bio-weapon known as Uroboros.
Perfect for teaching your girl how to play video games, you have to watch each other’s backs as you fight hoardes of zombies and follow the engaging storyline of this installation of Resident Evil. You get weapons such as pistols, shotguns, machine guns, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, rifles, and more. There’s jumpscares and puzzles, and huge slimey monsters to overcome as you progress finding treasure, ammo, and combining healing items.
After you finish the main game there are side game modes to keep you engaged, and ranks to set. The gold version gives you side modes like trapped in nightmares which allows you to play the backstory that sets the adventure for the main game. Mercenaries allows you to play as the main protagonists, as well as the antagonists, and other resident evil characters from completely different Resident Evil games.
