Don’t scroll down… Unless you’ve already seen this movie. Seriously, there’s going to be spoilers, as there are in all of my reviews. I’m pretty sure you have Netflix, or can at least get access to Netflix, so unless you really don’t mind, you should go get your own look at it first, then come back and talk shit in the comments. All right, let’s dive in.
Don’t look up is a fictional movie about the grim reality of the United States’ society, depicting how people act, and react often foolishly, how people can be selfish, and how those in power make decisions for personal gain regardless of the negative consequences.
Somewhat of a thriller/comedy, the plot revolves around two astrologists, and a government agency official, who attempt to warn the world of a large asteroid that is headed directly to earth, which will exterminate all life on the planet. The president of the United States throughout most of the movie is more concerned with her approval ratings than with the imminent threat to all of mankind. Major news networks prefer to keep people engaged in meaningless, fake-reality entertainment, and are resistant to speak honestly and thoroughly upon any harsh reality that may affect their view ratings.
The third richest man in the world used his power and influence to convince the government to abort a mission to save the world by deflecting the asteroid, so that he may mine the rock for rare resources which can further his already vast wealth. There is cheating, forgiveness, love, moving on, vulnerablility, adventure and other ideas explored in this film.
When they found out
The movie starts with this white girl, Kate Dibiasky, listening to Wu-Tang Clan in some space obvservation type room. She starts trippin’ when she notices a comet, and after closer observation with her field superior, Dr. Randall Mindy, the two of them recognize the comet as a probable extictinction level event. With this presumption, they contact the head of the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, Teddy Oglethorpe, and share with him their calculations. To their shock, he confirms the threat and sets in motion their immediate travel to the white house to inform the president.
The president wasn’t having it. She was impatient, and acted indifferent, saying “good for you” to Kate when she heard that the comet, Dibiasky, was named after her. She laughs at the doomsday scenerio together with her son, who is the head of state, and whose character is played by the comedian actor, Jonah Hill. They talk about how many times the president has heard from different sources about end of the world scenarios.
Let’s keep it real. If I found out the world is ending, i’d go buck wild. When I think about that, I understand why the government body may not immediately consider it the best idea to let everyone know that humankind is most likely going to face extinction in 6 months. If they say that, and everything is a false alarm, that’s a huge spike in crime in a short amount of time. Rape, theft, murder, drug usage to name a few. All because Jimmy and Joshua realized they’ve been following the law because they were afraid of jail, but now they have the rest of their lives to get into as much mayhem as they can. Might as well right?
That boy peter a bitch
When they introduced him, I thought he was some senile weird old fart. The way he talked slow, and like he didn’t have a soul made him seem like an undeveloped person. Like he doesn’t know of friendship, or love, or anything of human spirit. It was fucked up how he did that little girl too. First, his assistant took the phones away from the kids saying they’re not yours, (like he can’t afford to give away 4 phones) then he ignored the girl when she talked to him. She was all like, “I love you, Peter” and he just started talking to his team about his product.
He made me laugh after he got called out for being a businessman. He was saying something to Dr.Mindy about knowing his health problems, but it’s nothing to worry about anytime soon. It was funny the way he said it, because he felt insulted, and couldn’t think of a good come back. When his plan went wrong all he could say was “We’re all fine. Everyone’s fine.” and then he went to the bathroom and dipped on everybody like a straight pussy. The next time he made me laugh is when he comes out of his cryo-pod, and it becomes apparent that he’s probably going to get eaten by the creatures on another planet.
When Mindy cheated
I understand him cheating, but I wouldn’t have been spending so much time with the news anchor. That’s just a sneaky link, your wife is your family. He should’ve tried to work it out with her instead of staying with someone who doesn’t love you. The world was ending, and that anchor woman was still incapable of showing compassion to the guy she just had sex with. Nothing but a bustdown. Randall should’ve kept it G.
In the end, his wife forgave him, and accepted him and his company into their home after he showed up with them with groceries he had bought for their last meal as a family. They hugged and then she told him that while they were in college, she cheated on him with some guy, and never told him about it. Now, I know this may be hypocritical, but my first thought to say would’ve been: “And you weren’t gonna tell me about this?” How dare she? Then again though, that’s not the time to get into an argument over something so petty. I think most of us would agree to make an exception in that circumstance, and forgive one another so that you can die in peace together with the people you love.
It Was A Power Play
When that military official charged them for the snacks, Kate couldn’t let it go. She brought it up multiple times in different parts of the movie. Yea it was a dick move, but to be honest, I wouldn’t have paid $20 for a pack of peanuts and a bottle of water. She was a goofy for that. She probably bought reggie for $15 a G in high school. It was funny that her ex-boyfriend put her in his blog, but that didn’t make sense to me, because if you believe the world is gonna end, why would you break up with your girlfriend? The white dude she ended up hooking up with seemed cool, though.
Teddy was pretty solid throughout the movie, and Ariana Grande played her character well. It was a ditsy, two faced, shallow pop star. Tyler Perry hit his character good, too. He acted so well, I forgot it was him.
When the rock hit
I’m kind of a perv, so I really appreciated that part were those two asians were fucking. I was thinking if the world is ending, that’s what I’d want to be doing, right before being crushed by overwhelming seismic pressure caused by the asteroid. Enjoying the contenment of passionate sex with someone you love without another thought on your mind, right before a swift death for the both of you. Connection till the end.
If I wasn’t doing that, I’d probably be high on something, or doing something really intense and engaging. Like para gliding, or surfing, or street racing, sky diving, whatever. I would be trying to feel as much of life as I could, while I could. You wouldn’t catch me reading in a library, or watching tv. The way Mindy went out with his family was fine too, though. The whole scene made me think about the importance of human connection, and the value of genuineness.
Overall, I liked the movie. I don’t think it was movie of the year, but it was interesting to watch. I thought it was based off of a true story at first, because of the “The Planetary Defense Coordination Office” being mentioned as a real establishment, and me not knowing this was more like sci-fi from the beginning. As the movie went on, it got ridiculous, and I started to see it as more of a parody. I encourage you to watch it yourself, and comment what you think about it
